Notre Dame edges past top-ranked Holy Trinity in volleyball thriller

In a rematch of a Class 1A state semifinal match a year ago, the Notre Dame High School volleyball team eked out a tough win against SEI Superconference South Division rival Tuesday in the championship match of the Wapello Tournament.

Class 1A's eighth-ranked Notre Dame, the two-time defending state champion, held on for a 25-23, 25-22 victory over top-ranked Holy Trinity.

It is the first in what could be many matchups between the two state powers this season.

Notre Dame advanced with victories over Wapello, 16-21, 21-15, 15-13; English Valleys, 21-10, 21-8; and Keota, 21-6, 21-4.

Gabby Deery led the Nikes in kills with 34. She also had 17 digs, three aces and one block.

Abby Korschgen had 19 kills, three digs and three blocks. Madalynn Knapp had six kills, 11 digs, nine aces and one block. Ava Parkins had 21 digs. Aviana West had eight kills, three digs and one block. Maddy Mosena had 67 assist, 16 digs and two blocks. Taryn Stephens had six kills, 21 digs and eight aces.

Notre Dame plays Thursday at Danville, then hosts its own tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.
