William Schwind Obituary

William A. Schwind, 93, of Burlington, died Thursday, February 22, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 15, 1930, in a log cabin to William Philip and Susie Mae Harden Schwind in Ringwood, OK.  

Bill attended Burlington High School and graduated in May of 1948. While in school, he was active in Boy Scouts and later, Explorer Scouts.

Bill was drafted into the army in September 1951. He was a paratrooper at Ft. Benning, GA until he was discharged in 1953.

On September 27, 1952, he married Mary Jane Ertzinger at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Burlington.

After the army, he earned his mechanical engineering degree in February 1959 from the University of Iowa. He worked for Mason and Hanger - Silas Mason Co. at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant.

From there he owned and operated George's Lawnmower and Repair Shop for nine years. Later he worked for Hon Furniture, Klein Manufacturing, Henkel Chemical/Ecolab and V.S.L Corp as an engineering inspector for the cables on the new Mississippi River bridge at Burlington.

For 14 years he worked as the camp ranger at the YMCA Camp McBride. While there, he found improvement projects so that 31 boys could obtain their Eagle Scout awards.

He was a member of Divine Mercy Parish and the Jaycees. He was Concordia Township clerk for 24 years and a Boy Scout leader.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary; three daughters, Janice Boyles, Judith (Tim) Wagner, and Jacalyn Mehaffy; two sons, David (Brenda) Schwind, and Darrin Schwind; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Ellis Long; five sisters and son-in-law, Greg Boyles.

Bill always claimed to have a "Full House" - three Queens and two Jacks and that's a full house!

How did the farmer find his wife? He Tractor!

Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 4:30 PM Rosary Service Monday, February 26, 2024, at  Prugh Funeral Service, 3940 Division Street.

The Funeral Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Schwind will be 10:00 am Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church with Father Gary Beckman as the Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.  A time of food and fellowship will be held in the basement at Divine Mercy Parish-St. Paul's Catholic Church following burial.

A memorial has been established for Boy Scouts of America or Burlington Notre Dame School.
